At the age of one, Penelope Anne Constance Hatfield was born in Sutton, England. She was raised by her mother Connie in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, and Clapham, south London after her father, an army officer who rose to the rank of Major by the conclusion of World War II, abandoned her when she was a baby. John Gurney Nutting was Keith’s great uncle and a partner in the coachbuilding firm of J Gurney Nutting & Co Limited.
She was sent to a Catholic boarding school in Seaford, East Sussex, at the age of six, despite not being a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Here, she developed an interest in acting[2] and began accompanying her mother to West End matinee performances. Penelope’s mother remarried when she was eight years old, and she took her stepfather’s last name, Keith. Her mother was a “rock of love” to her, even if she didn’t get along with her stepfather.
She was turned away from the Central School of Speech and Drama because she was too tall at 5’10” (1.78 m). While working at the Hyde Park Hotel in the evenings, she was admitted into the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and studied there for two years before returning to her hotel job.
Keith began her career in repertory theatre in Lincoln, Manchester, and Salisbury, among other cities in the United Kingdom. Gigi, Flowering Cherry, and The Tunnel of Love were among the films in which Keith made his debut as an actor. Acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and at the Aldwych Theatre in London in 1963, she made her stage debut.

Personal Life
She married Rodney Timson, a police officer, in 1978, the year The Good Life concluded. Keith was acting at Chichester Theatre when they met when he was on duty there. They adopted two brothers in 1988, ten years after they married. In Milford, Surrey, Keith, and Timson have settled in.
Gardening is one of Keith’s favorite pastimes. Her favorite rose was named after her in 1984. For the National Trust for Historic Places or Natural Beauty, she serves as president of the South West Surrey chapter. As a tribute to the legacy of garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, she hosted 4 Extra Goes Gardening in 2014 in Godalming, Surrey. This program is rebroadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra on a sporadic basis.
Since Lord Olivier’s death in 1990, Keith has presided over the Actors Benevolent Fund as its president.
