Alexander Martin Clunes was born on November 28, 1961, in Wimbledon, London, England, and attended Royal Russell School and The Arts Educational Schools in Chiswick, London.
Clunes is the son of Alec and Daphne Clunes, who were also artists. His father died of lung cancer, and his mother worked for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In 1980, he made his television debut on Doctor Who, but he soon moved on to modeling for Gilbert and George. Clunes’ first regular television appearance was on BBC’s No Place Including Home, and he went on to appear in shows like Saving Grace, Jeeves, and Wooster, Hunting Venus, The Booze Cruise, Shakespeare in Love, Baldi, A is for Acid, Goodbye Mr. Chips, and Doc Martin.

Martin Clunes’ Professional Career
Clunes made his television debut as one of the sons in the BBC sitcom No Place Like Home and later starred in two series of the sitcom All at No 20. In 1993, he starred as Group Captain Barker in the two-part TV miniseries Over Here and as Dick Dobson in Demob, a film about two demobilized soldiers who amuse WWII troops with a raucous cabaret show.
Since 1994, he’s been a regular or guest presenter of the BBC One panel show Have I Got News for You. He played Richard Burbage in Sweet Revenge and Shakespeare in Love in 1998. He’s also made several radio performances, including a guest spot on BBC Radio 4’s Baldi.
He is a voice-over artist and the voice of Kipper in the animated children’s series Kipper the Dog. Clunes also voiced Harry in the ‘When Harry Met Molly’ advertising campaign from 1993 until 1999.
