Early Life and Childhood
David Khari Webber Chappelle was born in Washington, DC, on August 24, 1973. Professors Yvonne Chappelle Seon and William David Chappelle III raised him. Bishop D. Chappelle, his great-grandfather, was president of Allen University. Chappelle grew up in the Silver Spring, Maryland area.
He grew up idolizing Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor, and family friends who were entertained by Dave’s comedic antics and monologues regularly predicted that he would become a comic. Chappelle’s parents divorced when he was young, and he spent his summers in Ohio with his father. He earned his bachelor’s degree in theater from Duke Ellington School of the Art in 1991.
Career
Dave traveled to New York City after high school to pursue a comedy career. He was booed off stage at the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night, but he quickly built a name for himself on the New York comedy circuit. In 1992, he performed on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, receiving critical and popular praise for his performance. He became a regular guest on late-night shows including Late Show with David Letterman, The Howard Stern Show, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien after this. He debuted with a comedic routine for Aretha Franklin when he was 19 years old.
At the age of twenty, Chappelle made his film debut in Mel Brooks’ comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Chappelle went on to star in other films (including a small role in the Eddie Murphy-starring feature film The Nutty Professor in 1996 and co-writing and starring in the stoner film Half Baked in 1998), as well as try out for several failed television pilots before launching his own show, Chappelle’s Show, on Comedy Central in 2003.
After two successful seasons and two Emmy nominations, Chappelle abruptly quit the show during the production of the third season, albeit Comedy Central later aired the episodes recorded without him.
Chappelle listed his reasons for quitting as not liking the show’s direction, being overworked with 20-hour workdays, and not having time to devote to his stand-up career. Walking away from the program meant canceling a $50 million Comedy Central deal.
Michel Gondry directed Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, a documentary about a rap event held by Chappelle in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, in 2004, which featured a number of rap and hip-hop acts, including The Fugees’ reunion.
Comeback
Dave experimented in numerous stand-up acts and TV show appearances from 2005 to 2013, before making a significant professional comeback in 2013. He resumed his own stand-up tours. For the first time in 11 years, he performed ten nights at Radio City Music Hall in June 2014. On November 12, 2016, the weekend after Donald Trump was elected president, Chappelle headlined Saturday Night Live for the first time. His articulate and incisive opening monologue and subsequent sketch performance earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. His Emmy was given to his previous secondary school.
Personal Life
Elaine Mendoza Erfe has been Chappelle’s wife since 2001. Sulayman and Ibrahim are their boys, and Sanaa is their daughter. On a 65-acre farm outside Yellow Springs, Ohio, the family resides. Chappelle also has property near Xenia, Ohio.
Dave became an Islamic convert in 1998. In the 2020 presidential election, he endorsed Andrew Yang. Dave volunteers his time at Maine’s Seeds of Peace International Camp. The group brings together young leaders from conflict-affected communities.
In August 2019, he hosted the Gem City Shine Charity Concert in Dayton, Ohio, with a star-studded lineup that included Stevie Wonder and Chance the Rapper. The benefit event earned over $70,000 for the Oregon District Tragedy Fund in memory of the victim of the August 4, 2019, Dayton tragedy.
