She was one of three children born to domestic servant Fredericka (Huggins) Tyson and carpenter and painter William Augustine Tyson.

Tyson’s mother forbade her from speaking to her for a while because she didn’t want her to become an actress. When she saw Cicely on the stage, she had a change of heart.
