Roth once told BuzzFeed, “We lived our lives like roughnecks.” “I’ve done my fair share of drugs.” I had my long hair and everything. Every day was a new experience.” Despite his crazy public persona, tattoos were never Roth’s thing until recently.
The rockstar told Vogue that he got his first tattoo in the late 1970s when the art form was still considered socially taboo outside of the rock and motorcycle scenes. “Eventually, though, I took a much more gentrified approach,” he recalls, “waiting till I was 60 and getting the entire Japanese tuxedo.” “It took me two years and 300 hours of sitting.”
Despite the fact that he waited until he was older to get totally tattooed, Roth claims that he planned it all back when he was a rock star. He tells Vogue, “I planned it for 30 years prior, and it’s my design: kabuki faces, the original showbiz, presented Edo style—it looks like a woodblock print.”
Roth is now the owner of a tattoo shop.
Despite the fact that Roth waited decades to have his numerous tattoos, he now looks to truly appreciate the art form. He’s even invested in a tattoo shop called Tattoodo. “I started this project with three of us at my place in L.A., sitting around an upended plastic bucket for a table,” Roth says. “There are now 34 of us, and we have offices in both New York and Los Angeles.” It’s taken three years and cost close to $7 million, and I’ve been involved in every aspect of it.”
Roth explains that he enjoys tattoos since they are related to his artistic endeavors.
He tells Vogue, “It’s a language—ink—that everyone shares, especially if you don’t speak the same language.” “We read each other’s signs and images with ink.” It’s similar to music in that manner.”
