Rocker David Lee Roth didn’t get most of his tattoos until he was 60 years old.

David Lee Roth is an American rock musician who has led the hard rock band, Van Halen, for nearly three decades and is known for his outrageous stage acts and vivacious attitude.

Many fans may assume that because Roth is a rock music veteran, he fully embodies the clichéd tropes of the industry, including piercings and tattoos. However, Roth acknowledged in an honest interview that he didn’t acquire most of his tattoos until he was far into his senior years.

In the 1970s, Roth began collaborating with Van Halen.

Roth began singing while he was a teenager, before meeting Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen. The Van Halen brothers were fronting the Los Angeles rock band Mammoth at the time. Before the band changed its name to Van Halen, it hired Roth as its lead singer.

According to Biography.com, “Van Halen rapidly became a hit, with Roth’s passionate, occasionally primal vocals and Eddie Van Halen’s innovative guitar work.” Several platinum albums were released by the group in the 1970s and 1980s. Roth left the band in 1985, rejoined for a brief reunion in 1996, and then returned to his lead singer role full-time in 2007. This revival lasted until the band’s retirement in 2020.

“Offstage, Roth and his colleagues earned a reputation as one of rock’s most hedonistic acts,” according to the publication. “Van Halen, according to Roth, made Led Zeppelin appear like Boy Scouts.”

Despite his partying reputation and lifestyle, Roth said that one facet of the hedonistic music industry that he avoided was tattooed.

Roth didn’t receive the majority of his tattoos until he was far into his senior years.

Roth once told BuzzFeed, “We lived our lives like roughnecks.” “I’ve done my fair share of drugs.” I had my long hair and everything. Every day was a new experience.” Despite his crazy public persona, tattoos were never Roth’s thing until recently.

The rockstar told Vogue that he got his first tattoo in the late 1970s when the art form was still considered socially taboo outside of the rock and motorcycle scenes. “Eventually, though, I took a much more gentrified approach,” he recalls, “waiting till I was 60 and getting the entire Japanese tuxedo.” “It took me two years and 300 hours of sitting.”

Despite the fact that he waited until he was older to get totally tattooed, Roth claims that he planned it all back when he was a rock star. He tells Vogue, “I planned it for 30 years prior, and it’s my design: kabuki faces, the original showbiz, presented Edo style—it looks like a woodblock print.”

Roth is now the owner of a tattoo shop.

Despite the fact that Roth waited decades to have his numerous tattoos, he now looks to truly appreciate the art form. He’s even invested in a tattoo shop called Tattoodo. It’s an international online community of tattoo fans, artists, and studios that offers tattoo inspiration, services, and education.

“I started this project with three of us at my place in L.A., sitting around an upended plastic bucket for a table,” Roth says. “There are now 34 of us, and we have offices in both New York and Los Angeles.” It’s taken three years and cost close to $7 million, and I’ve been involved in every aspect of it.”

Roth explains that he enjoys tattoos since they are related to his artistic endeavors.

He tells Vogue, “It’s a language—ink—that everyone shares, especially if you don’t speak the same language.” “We read each other’s signs and images with ink.” It’s similar to music in that manner.”
